A unique book, born of an unlikely meeting. This charming limited edition book
will present the portrait photography and extensive reminiscences of the former
Rolling Stone bass player Bill Wyman. Every copy will be signed by Bill and individually
numbered. The book will be bound to order by the finest Italian craftsmen in blue
quarter leather and white canvas silk-screened in two colours, and housed in a
blue cloth-covered slipcase.
In 1971 all the members of The Rolling Stones moved to the South of France, where they recorded the classic album Exile on Main Street. They had initially moved abroad as a temporary measure, but Bill ended up staying a dozen years. In Vence, near the ProvenÙal town of St Paul de Vence, he bought a plot of land, built a house, and then found himself near to the great artist, Marc Chagall, celebrated for his dream-like canvases of horses’ heads, angels and floating people, always rendered in extraordinarily vivid colours. Chagall was in his eighties by then, but he and Bill quickly established a warm friendship, meeting regularly for afternoon tea.
Since his childhood Bill Wyman has been a keen and able amateur photographer, and over several years he captured his distinguished neighbour in images (both colour and black and white) which resonate with informality and intimacy. These shots have been brought together for this book, and will be faithfully reproduced in the high-quality printing for which Genesis is famed. To provide context, an extensive personal selection of Bill’s other photography down the years is also to be included.
Bill has provided a candid and humorous commentary to accompany the pictures, reflecting at length on his friendship with Chagall, life as a Rolling Stone in the South of France, and his long-term love of photography.
